Lines from the Months of This Last Year: April

1.
Uhhhh. I don't even KNOW what I need. I need more of You. I need to be faithful with little. Help me. And give me much when I've learned. Help help.
Madeleine talked about how we overuse some of these four-letter words.
                                          H  e  l  p .
It's on its way. I trust You.

2.
How can I take on more responsibility?

4.
Writing from A's window seat. I appreciate this family so much.
It is an overcast day, but the birds are active. Two fat ducks just landed in the puddle by the treeline.

6.
Lord God,
What can I say to You? What is there?
As. You. Wish.

Two years ago today was Maundy Thursday, in Orvieto.
One of the best days of my life.
Today I went to the Evangelism class at 9am, a video lesson. It was thought provoking. And provoking.
What do people need to hear and know? How can we best understand? It's not such a clear "us-them." Who is God?
Whey does He love me? Why should I love Him?
What right do you have to accost me  - what is your motive?
Motives. I do not ever want to speak out of guilt or compulsion. But out of genuine concern, love, drive. Not that God couldn't use my words in any form,
but Madeleine L'Engle wrote about how we speak to people most by who we are. Who am I? Does my life witness?
What must be told as parable, and what can be spit out clean and offensive & joyous?

Being called like Samuel. Do You Still Call Me?
Yes, Lord.
Here I am.
Your Servant wants to listen.
I hate being so half-hearted, mistrusting. Apprehensive. Pouty. When
You Delight In Me.
Can I learn to take it one day at a time and trust You?
For good? For $? For <3? For this little lentil of a heart?
Hear me, heal me. Show me righteousness.
Give me a steady drip of grace.
Build real love in us. Help us not fear.
Why is it so easy to be cynical about romantic love? Don't good things have to be believed in?
TRUSTED.
M   E    &    Y   O   U  .

7.
Anoint my tongue. Guard it with me.

My problem is not Paul's. He acted in ignorance & unbelief. I know, but I just don't care. And I'm a coward. A people-pleaser. A comfort-lover. Or maybe I don't really believe, because if I did I'd care more about people's eternal comfort and pleasure than their earthly ease. Life isn't about ease. Lord, help me. I know fear and guilt could choke me. Free me, love and speak through me, truth, law, grace.

--

He is like a tree. Tall, contained, eager but unruffled. Of few words, but easy ones.  Ruminated, aged ones. He is not lazy, is not busy. He is.
He does what there is to be done, in season. Steadily works, readily rests, heartily enjoys.
He is friendly, but not suave. He likes people and is therefore easily liked, respected because he is honest. He is childlike. There is no social veneer. No careful solicitude. Only curiosity and attention. His hands are the most beautiful. Brown & knotted with callouses, cracked in places, still edged with earth.

---

Help all of us to have softer hearts this week.
Help me not to get tied up in knots, but love from who You made me to be.

9(10).
Guide forth, my Lord. Be glorified in us. Make me more and more Yours. Utterly, undeniably, willingly. You give me such joy. This is a beautiful life.
Thank You for Yours.

11.
Decided to let go of C's wedding bouquet. I found a Kleenex folded up and tucked between the roses. I cried quite a bit that wedding, and didn't have sleeves to hide tissues in.
Today is painfully beautiful. One of those rare, first warm days before everything bursts into life. Few insects, many birds. Budding forsythias. Breeze, clean air. A heaviness, too, the feeling of impending rain. Spring peepers.
The highway, the chimes. Iris yapping. Am I allowed to drink this? Do I know what any of it means, I so short on earth, not capable even of the back deck, and never a tree? But is it also for me? Can I be safely lost in this, and trust it (You), trust this love because it makes me quiver, swell, dissolve? I disappear in You, and become. I don't understand. I am sad for spring, too, this year.
"Heaven is my heart made large enough
to love You the way You deserve."

Edible air, goodness so real and graspable. Jesus. You can have me.

13.
Dear Jesus.
Thank You for seeing, and knowing, and loving with such perfection.
Thank You for yesterday. Thank You for helping her come, and come dancing. For the dancing. So, so good. I danced every dance!
You know what You are doing.
Oh, provide. NOTHING can be done without You.
Make them wise and innocent, righteous and humble.
Cars, $, spouses, houses, jobs. Care for us.

14(15).
Only You are my help.
Thank You that You WILL BE here for everything. That You never fail, and You are more trustworthy than Your creatures could ever be.
Do sanctify me.
Full moon. Blooming forsythia. Fan on, blankets swapped. Spring is here. Hallelujah.

17. Maundy Thursday
Dear Lord,
You know why I'm here, downstairs quarantined with the flu, rather than on my way to New York. Please take this time and use it. I give all I am and have to You.

19. Easter Eve
"Who knew fever breaking was like water breaking,
Cold sweat, wet bed and
'What has happened to me?
Am I born again, resurrected?'"

20.
Keep leading us. Help us follow.
Praise You, Risen Lord.
Do I believe You rose? I'm trying to imagine. If I say I don't it, doesn't make sense. I do. I guess You could say I'm staking my life on it.
Like Madeleine, believing utterly with all kinds of doubts. Help me.

J: "You looked like death this morning....Beautiful and something to
look forward to."

21.
Lord, help me to desire Your Word, not just be tired of my sickbed.
Wowza. Remember before I could write? And now I can write almost without thinking about it.
Hope for driving, huh?

22.
Thank You that I can sleep in my own bed tonight.

24(25).
Dear Jesus,
Thank You that You see me. That You care about how low I feel today, and I don't have to hide it, to hide from You. Please help me.
Thank You for Rilke's 8th letter. For E's text, and A's call immediately after I asked for prayer. For Mom and Dad praying over me. For a talk with J.
Please keep us all firmly under Your hand of protection and guidance. Use us. Make us fruitful. Please give me patience and trust.
"I Will Wait."

25.
I feel trapped in smallness...I keep rearranging my room. Trying to get rid of things. Is it really because I'm preparing for something, or am I just growing stagnant? Where is the life You showed me, that would call for everything I had, even beyond what I felt capable of? Isn't that life also (always) Today?
I want something large and demanding and beautiful to give myself to.
But how well am I preparing?

27.
I have something to battle the depression with - praise.
Help them to refuse to let this slide. To fight for their love with YOUR WORD, all the weapons and strength You provide.
We are trusting You Lord, for victory over sin and death and brokenness. Trusting Your redemptive power, Your LOVE and mercy. Your justice.

Thank You, Lord.
Please keep feeding me truth and hope, and help me give my whole self to You, every day. Not hold back anything out of fear, but know the glorious freedom of abandonment to You, and of seeing You multiply my loaves and fish.
PLEASE DO IT.

28.
Thank You for picking me up again and again. Please keep showing Yourself strong in my weakness, and humbling me by the graciousness and love of my family and friends. Bless us Lord. Help us mean our words. Help us know Your Word, and live it. Use it as it is meant to be used.
It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of God. But better Your hands than anyone else's.

Lines from the Months of this Last Year: March

1 (2).
Love is kind.

2.
We walked arm in arm. It might have been beautiful. We weren't paying attention to the brittle lights over the Atlantic Ocean. Stars didn't matter. Only clean cold oxygen and our elbows pressed close and the earnest rap of our voices.

5. Ash Wednesday
Tarrying, tarrying. I'm the one tarrying.
We went back and forth all night on the ferrying. And I ate your apple, and you ate my pear, in hopes that Saint Nicolas soon would be there.
It's so absurd, Jesus, how far away the wedding feels already. You know. Hoody Magoody, I don't know. I don't know how to feel about this because for so long I've been eating the crumbs from under his table. I'm under the wrong table, huh? Ashes to ashes. Jesus.

7.
"You are so kind, and I will remember this night for years to come." (Karen Peris, Minta's Waltz).
Lord, I feel so loved. Help me keep loving, seeing. Being real. Thank You for all the things You are weaving together, these moments of hope and bliss. Bless us and give us Yourself to eat.

8.
Help me to be meek, Jesus. How often I think "Hate! I hate hate hate this!" Driving, or feeling penned in or patronized or controlled. I need Your wisdom, discretion, meekness and obedience and pure heart.
Because I want to see You.

11.
Lord, I need You desperately. I mostly wrote that because it rhymed with what came before. But I want to actually mean it, because it IS TRUE. Blah. Haha!
Keep doing more than I can imagine. Make me transparent. Touch me, pull me out of my cave. Teach me songs in my sleep. Show me what to do with these arms.
Teach me patience. Give me true love. Happy Birthday.

12.
So many sweet conveniences. Saint Francis. YOU YOU YOU YOU. Glorying in YOU. Glorify Your Name in me, my only Jesus.

16.
With You, You wild thang, nothing is impossible.
How can I know You, Holy Terror?
Why do You love me?
Show me You love me. Again and again.
CHASE
ME.

Amen.

Golly.
Gosh.
Goobers.

These words are such fun but I feel guilty using them. Especially the first two. Is it misusing You?
I'm an iconoclast. Not. Yet...
Dufus.
Dunderhead.
Rumpus-Gumpus.
Roobity-doop-doobers.

17 (18).
Late Saint Paddy's.
Jesus, thank You for so many things today. Toast and eggs and working out. Feeding juncoes and finches from my hand.
Thank You that when I knocked my solvent over, the lid was screwed on. Thank You for cards. For the peeler. For the 2 books. Mom insisted on wrapping them. She reused paper from the bridal shower gift. And the best part: she gave me a sweet little card in a tiny pink envelope, and she didn't write anything in it at all, so that I could reuse it.

Send out my songs to sound at least a little like You.
Help me disappear.
Help me with everything. To choose to trust. To choose contentment.
I give You forever. Tonight.
Tomorrow. Take me Jesus.

18.
Her call came while I was unzipping my jeans. I saw the number on the caller ID, but didn't recognize it, and heard Mom pick up. I didn't take my pants off, waited, figuring it must be for me, this late.
Mom knocked softly on my closed door a moment later. I answered, and heard the flatness of her reply.
Lord, how. How do we begin to fathom how close You are in this, when we can only be numb.

I watched "The Royal Tenenbaums" earlier today. It is not a good movie. I did not like it. But I'm not so sure.
In its perversity it circled around and made occasional dips into truth, and raw raw beauty. Tender human beauty. Needy ugly sexy gaudy twisted childlike beauty. Triumphant beauty. Like a Flannery O'Connor, just without Jesus.

God, how will You meet us after all, all this is taken away?
What is real comfort?
Blueberry muffins. Silence.
Remembering six months from now.
Lord God, remember us. Your will be done.
Glorify Your Name.

22.
Display Your power, like in Ezekiel 25. That we may know You are the LORD.
Your power. Your Love. The two things I know about You,
My Jesus.

23(24).
Help me be a good friend. And a better lover to You.
I'm so focused on myself, so often. How am I portraying You? What does my life,
what do my priorities, say about You?
Help me fearlessly praise Your Name.

24.
Jesus, thank You for today's small victories.

27.
Praise and support are so helpful and so...unhelpful. Help me not be self conscious. But since this IS also a gift to others, help me not be selfish or private out of mock modesty. Just please make it what You will. Bigger than me. In spite of myself.

Lines from the Months of This Last Year: February

2/6
Kindness over & over. And still I shrink back from You. Croon over me in my sleep, help me know Your voice so well that I'll believe You without trying.
Keep prayers flowing in and out of me like water.

I've felt ugly, hungry, heavy again today, like I haven't in a while. A dirty sort of self-destruction. Lord, free me. Help me recognize the lies and fight them, have discipline. Help me talk to You.

2/7(8)
Please show me how to love all these people. Put Your hands on us. Breathe new life.

2/8
I don't want him a pansy or a safe man. But I don't want him a fool or a liar, either.

2/9
Show me how to give and receive and trust, and not be such a small mound of gravel.
Jesus, if You are all that really matters, then show it to me. It means everything else can rot. You remain. I am not a sentimental cross-stitch or a grenade (thx John Green). But I need to be Yours, and I need to be nothing and something in You. What can I add to Your universe? What can I heal?
Patch up my wounds, and the wounds I inflict.
Cover over my conversation this morning. I'm afraid I was merciless. Forgive me.

9/14(15)
Dear Lord Jesus,
How can You be dear and my Lord at the same time? How can You become more of both? Please do. Please do become more of both. How can I treasure and desire and be loyal to You? How can I revere and worship and obey You?
Dear. Lord.    Jesus.

2/16
Jesus, I am overwhelmed by You again. Thank You for orchestrating this day.

2/18
Jesus,
Bring to mind what I can't. Holy Spirit. Help me be in Your Mind again. Show me it's more than me, looking in the mirror.

2/19(20)
Lord, thank You for this good day. Feeding a white-throated sparrow this morning. A night of "Fantastic Mr. Fox", Balderdash, and stars & a golden cheese jewel moon.

2/20
YOU HAVE THE VICTORY
Thank You DAD. Painfully sweet days.
We should always pray and not give up. A year ago, Dr. L was still alive. And MB, and SC, and WT, and S's Dad...Lord. Teach us. Guard us, guide us toward You, toward truth and understanding. Let our hearts be large. Do not by any means let us harden.

2/24
Please take my life. Tomorrow. Everything. Work out who I might see. What we all do. Help us love. Help us really rest tonight. Let down our anxious guard and embrace Your presence, peace, provision. Humor & delight. Help us be Marys, not Marthas.

2/26
Lord, come. In kindness. Show us that You are compassionate and gracious, God.
Help me, now. Help us all.
                                  LOVE  LOVE  LOVE.
All our needs will be met.
I am deeply well.

Anna

I have lost count of years, and today
they do not matter
at all.

To the young, years are important;
to we who wait so long,
each added hour feeds our small
abyss, waiting for His greater one
to swallow up the whole.

There is no counting
love or prayers on fingers.
Everything is given, heady
with abandon,
even if the gasps of wonder at it
rasp out like a senile
cough.

They hear me laugh, cackle,
'The old prophetess,
she has worn away her mind at last
with all that prayer and fasting.'
But I see blazing in the wraps
at the pap of His mother
the kingly one,
the one the stars are singing for,
drooling, wide-eyed, pink-fingered
perfection.

Children of today are solemn things;
I am happier than they.

Lines from the Months of This Last Year: January

1/1
New Year's Day happens as often as the others. Any day is a new beginning.
If we had to choose a special, rare day, Feb 29 would fit better.
There is nothing to fear, everything to hope, going forward with You.
Bless with abundant rain. Autumn & spring BOTH.

Today we built a fire in the fireplace. I told Mom it made me feel like we were a legitimate family.

1/2
The fire is so good. Outside it snows.
Got my bridesmaid dress today. Hung artwork at the library. Got plenty of books out, too. Mostly wanting transcendence. But I'm stale, I think I am ignoring something.
For sure, I am insecure and impatient, greedy to feel wanted. And I'm cloaking and ignoring this need. Oh Jesus.
Where I am hungry I don't like to admit it. As if I don't deserve to eat.
And yet - here You are offering Your flesh and blood to me! How can I refuse You?
How can I even attempt to say, "I'm not hungry"? Yes, Yes, Lord! Feed me Yourself, succour me on all Your goodness. I will gather daily, enough for the day. My bread & wine, my mother's milk. Your mouth is sweetness itself. Honey is under Your tongue.
Make me an orchard.

Jesus. What my hands are holding too tightly, I give back to You.

1/5
I am writing from my bed. These last couple of days I have been groggy, sick, but now I'm off Benadryl for the moment, and my head is clearer.
I have been pretty unhappy for a lot of this week. This afternoon, with C's fb message, Psalm 71, and a cup of cocoa, I improved. But I'm still not right.
East of Eden is like a slow pressure on my temples, and I can't decide if it's relieving tension or creating it.
But I do know, in all of this (and my silly desire to be deep, supra), there is a cocky eucharisteo. That happened today, too. There are always countless things to be thankful for. Even if I cannot live to experience them all, they are.
And mostly You. You are the center. It all revolves around You. Even when I cannot pray. Hold me. Make something out of me, this creation of Yours. Remind me about being made in Your image (all of us).

1/6
Lord, remind me that I'm not making You up.

Give me a personal epiphany. Not to test You, but because I want You.
Beloved. You know me, I am safe and not too small, or too large, with You. It is as it should be when I am quiet against Your steady breathing.

1/9
Lord, thank You that I only need to see You.

1/10
I saw our flock
Like Jacob's flock,
Jacob's flocks and herds,
Jacob's sons and daughters,
Blessed from the bottom of the belly,
Sent out over mountains,
Named and blessed.

And could I live like this?
If God is calling you to dance, do you resist?
When Psyche saw him in the light,
Was she surprised?

Each swinging door,
Each figure carved by hand!
I understand.

1/11
Give me love for You
more than for my own strangeness.

Barefoot in the snow-swollen grass, wet and warm and smelling fresh. Kissing the crabapple. Spinning, leaping, slipping down onto Your soft lap. Laughing. Mud splattering my ankles. Damp curls fraying from my ponytail.
It has been a good day. Too much of me, but a good day, and I praise You that You will redeem it.
Make a Sabbath here, Jesus.
Let me fall into You again, trust the tie between us. It is adamantine.

1/13
I have the Welsh rats I guess (thanks Steinbeck). Whatever I do, there is sadness and longing over me. But it may not be a bad thing. I just want to LOVE. If I died tonight, I would regret not loving better. Being intentional.
I don't feel very well known right now. I feel like I'm being polite.

1/14
Today leaves me tingling. So many ways we need You.
I took a walk while the challah rose.
Even tonight I noticed how desperate we humans are for real interpersonal connection, to be seen and affirmed. The hunger, the care too, were visible. So help us. Make us one in You. Use us in each other's lives, to love and sharpen, and spur us toward You. Help me be less, less, less...
Jesus, none of the people You made deserve worship. Not me.

1/17
"I am the LORD thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt: open thy mouth wide, and I shall fill it.
I would have fed them also with the finest wheat-flour; and with honey out of the stony rock would I have satisfied thee."

(Psalm 81:11, 17)

---
'It burns like a blazing fire, like a mighty flame.'

Do we always long? Is it only the young?
Do we grow tired of desire when we grow old, or does it only cut a deeper groove?

Today I did a lot of small tasks that seemed petty. It seems like everything was luxury, a joy, when I look back on it now.

Will I ever learn to trust? All I see now are kisses and hands and arms. I want to practice these sacred and intimate contacts. I want to see, to know, to understand even if I die. All my life I want to gaze on Your beauty, and seek You in Your temple. In Your sanctuary. Lord... I am Your temple. This body, even. Help me honor it and honor the others, Your temple. Your bride, Your body.
Make me a home.
"I'd just be sitting here stitching you into my heart."

1/19
Lord Jesus,
Please keep me under Your wings tonight. I feel like I've been out in the rain and sun, played too hard, got a scare. Tuck me in close, Mother. Father, teach me how to go forward.
Wean me off of myself, and all the distractions. Prepare me for Yourself, and for the work You have for me. Give me singleness of mind & heart, and selflessness. I have been looking in the mirror too much, on fb too much, even in my journal too much. Trying to find myself. I find myself in You.
I am thankful for the family I'm building here. I need You to help me never stop loving or let love be polluted by pride, envy, lust, doubt, fear...only Your pure love. Don't let us grow cold.
Don't let division, misunderstanding, illusions of being overlooked or misunderstood, distract us.

1/20
"Because Jesus succeeded for me,
I am free to fail!"

-T Tchividjian

1/22
If you don't have a house...
HOSPITABLE SOUL.

1/30(31)
I am especially grateful for meaningful conversations. How I miss (thrive on!) those. I feel encouraged. Not elated or noisesome or transported, but quietly, solidly fed and affirmed - and challenged. May You confirm everything true, and Your very self. Cover and transform the unintentional, the mistakes, the weaknesses. You are the BEST. And deserve all praise.

Salt & a Blanket & Magic

11.22.14
Today, Jesus.
Today was a reminder of how much I love You. Say Geronimo!
I've got to. You hunted me down,
You invited me to the picnic, You led me barefoot
into thistles and "cutgrass" but You made mud paste for my eyes,
and I don't want to miss this.

When I'm blind, You whistle like a bird for me to cross the street,
the river. You are rich espresso, strange marvelous spices
I know to be true at first sip.
Keep me never satisfied with ketchup.
I'm hungriest for You. You're salt & a blanket & magic.

Holy Son of God, Righteous King, Lord,
Geez, You're somethin' to see.
(Help me be reverent & confident?)

Burst

Quietly. It slips in the sweat of your shoes,
slips up and down with his eyes,
against the gas pedal, Armageddon,
orange leaves, pomegranate seeds.
Tattered wings.

Hiccups of the heart, trying trying not to blush.
Sequestered, clandestine openings up until
loud enough to be heard, skirling under clouds,
bursting, blistering, purifying.
